The nominations for the 95th Academy Awards have been announced and, no surprises, RRR<\/em> has been nominated for an Oscar (one of three nods for Indian cinema) – Best Original Song for Naatu Naat<\/em>u which also won the Golden Globe in the same category. Naatu Naatu<\/em> will compete against four other nominated songs – Applause<\/em> from Tell It Like A Woman<\/em>, Lady Gaga’s Hold My Hand<\/em> from Top Gun: Maverick<\/em>, Rihanna’s Lift Me Up<\/em> from Black Panther: Wakanda Forever<\/em> and This Is A Life<\/em> from Everything Everywhere All At Once<\/em>. A notable omission is Taylor Swift’s Carolina<\/em> from Where The Crawdads Sing<\/em>, which was nominated for a Golden Globe.<\/p>\n

Two Indian-made documentaries are also going to the Oscars – All That Breathes<\/em> has been nominated for Best Documentary Feature Film and The Elephant Whisperers<\/em> for Best Documentary Short. India’s official Oscar entry, Chhello Show<\/em> or Last Picture Show<\/em>, was left out of the final slate in the Best International Feature Film category.<\/p>\n

RRR<\/em> and the documentaries join a select group of Indian films to have gone to the Oscars – Mother India, Salaam Bombay<\/em> and Lagaan<\/em> were nominated for Best International Feature Film. Were he to add an Oscar to his Golden Globe, Naatu Naatu<\/em> composer MM Keeravaani will be part of a group of Indian Oscar winners that includes Bhanu Athaiya who won Best Costume Design for Gandhi<\/em>, and AR Rahman, Gulzar and sound engineer Resul Pookutty who won Oscars for their work in Slumdog Millionaire<\/em>, a British-made film set in India.<\/p>\n

The nominations for the Oscars were announced by actors Riz Ahmed and Alison Williams. The 95th Academy Awards will be held in Los Angeles on March 12. Chat show host Jimmy Kimmel will host for the third time.<\/p>\n
