\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tCongress leader Rahul Gandhi was today found guilty in a 2019 defamation case and sentenced to two years in jail over remarks about Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s surname. \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n

Here are five points on the defamation case against Rahul Gandhi:<\/h2>\n

    The court in Gujarat’s Surat, which convicted Mr Gandhi, also granted him bail for 30 days, allowing him to appeal the decision.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    The case pertains to Mr Gandhi’s remarks at a rally in Karnataka’s Kolar on April 13, 2019, just ahead of the Lok Sabha elections. “How come all the thieves have Modi as the common surname?” he had allegedly remarked.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  3. \n

    The case was registered on a complaint lodged by BJP MLA and former Gujarat minister Purnesh Modi, who alleged Mr Gandhi’s remark defamed the entire Modi community.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  4. \n

    The hearing of the final arguments of both sides concluded last week and March 23 was set for announcing the judgment, Mr Gandhi’s lawyer Kirit Panwala had said. Mr Gandhi had last appeared before the Surat court in the case, in October 2021 to record his statement.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    \u00a0Mr Gandhi was sentenced under sections 499 and 500 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), which deal\u00a0with criminal defamation, his lawyer Babu Mangukiya said.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
