(File)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Harvard president Claudine Gay has publicly apologised for her response during a congressional hearing on antisemitism. When asked about whether calls for &#8220;genocide&#8221; against Jews would violate Harvard&#8217;s code of conduct, she did not provide a direct answer, stating that it depended on the &#8220;context.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am sorry,\u201d Ms Gay said in an interview published in<a data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.thecrimson.com\/article\/2023\/12\/8\/gay-apology-congressional-remarks\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1702198172408000&amp;usg=AOvVaw27fwWKp_e4he4EefDIJqxE\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thecrimson.com\/article\/2023\/12\/8\/gay-apology-congressional-remarks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u00a0The Harvard Crimson<\/a>\u00a0on Thursday. \u201cWhen words amplify distress and pain, I don&#8217;t know how you could feel anything but regret.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Claudine Gay added that she should have, in that moment, returned to the guiding truth, that calls for violence against Jewish community have no place at Harvard, and will never go unchallenged. \u201cSubstantively, I failed to convey what is my truth\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday, Claudine Gay, along with President Liz Magill from UPenn and Sally Kornbluth from MIT, faced criticism for their responses during<a data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.ndtv.com\/world-news\/harvard-mit-penn-questioned-about-rising-anti-semitism-on-campuses-4638761&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1702198172408000&amp;usg=AOvVaw1IWqeyEzQTWbf8sZhjjfag\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ndtv.com\/world-news\/harvard-mit-penn-questioned-about-rising-anti-semitism-on-campuses-4638761\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u00a0a five-hour congressional hearing<\/a>. Republican congresswoman Elise Stefanik questioned Ms Gay about Harvard&#8217;s stance on calling for the genocide of Jews, asking if it violated the university&#8217;s rules on bullying and harassment. Responding, Gay said, &#8220;It can be, depending on the context.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Stefanik urged Gay for a clear yes or no answer, but she emphasised that antisemitic speech crossing into behaviour constituting bullying, harassment, or intimidation is considered actionable conduct, and Harvard takes appropriate action in such cases.<\/p>\n<p>Stefanik responded, \u201cSo the answer is yes, that calling for the genocide of Jews violates Harvard&#8217;s code of conduct, correct?\u201d Gay replied, \u201cAgain, it depends on the context.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Stefanik fired back that it didn&#8217;t depend on the context, adding the\u00a0answer was yes, and that&#8217;s the reason Gay should resign. &#8220;These are unacceptable answers across the board.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">????????????Presidents of <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Harvard?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@Harvard<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MIT?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@MIT<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Penn?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@Penn<\/a> REFUSE to say whether \u201ccalling for the genocide of Jews\u201d is bullying and harassment according to their codes of conduct. Even going so far to say it needs to turn to \u201caction\u201d first.
