England had called back all of their players from the Indian Premier League for their T20 World Cup preparation, which included the crucial T20I series against Babar Azam’s Pakistan.

After Pakistan lost the second match at Edgbaston on Saturday by 23 runs, Vaughan said that some of the players might have been better off in the IPL 2024. Speaking at the Club Praire podcast, Vaughan felt that England missed a trick by not letting some of their players play in the IPL 2024.

“I think you’re going to miss the trick by sending all their players home. You know, I think Will Jacks, Phil Salt, Josh Butler, in particular, playing in the IPL in the eliminators, pressure, crowd, expectation. I would argue that playing here is better preparation than playing a T20 game against Pakistan,” Vaughan said in the podcast.

ENG vs PAK, 2nd T20I: Match Report

Vaughan said that some of the England batters like Phil Salt and Will Jacks could have been better prepared in the high-pressure IPL rather than playing Pakistan at home. England will go into the tournament as the defending champions. The team did not have a good outing in the ODI World Cup 2023 and will be desperate to change their fortunes this time around.

“I’m all for international cricket, but now and again, this tournament in particular, it’s so exposed to pressure. These players are under a huge amount of pressure from fans, owners, and social media. It’s massive. I just felt particularly those two, and Butler, probably not as much, but I still think he could have stayed here,” Vaughan said.

“But Will Jacks and Phil Salt, I think they’d have been better prepared staying here playing in the IPL, then going back to head and let’s play a game,” Vaughan concluded the former captain.

England play a total of 4 T20Is vs Pakistan.
